give my regards to broadway
August 1, 2005 at 5:25 pm | In Miscellaneous, Movies, Theater | No CommentsIf there are any fans of Broadway musicals out there, run, don’t walk, to the nearest video store or library and rent the 6-disc documentary Broadway, the American Musical. I’m only on disc 1 and I’m entranced. The marvelous (and still youthful) Julie Andrews narrates this fascinating look into the history of the Broadway musical. The first episode covers the history of Broadway, how things got started and the founding fathers and mothers (including Florenz Ziegfield, George M. Cohen, Bert Williams and Fanny Brice). The second episode — which I’ve only just started — covers the 1920s. It’s wonderful, really.
julia roberts to make broadway debut
July 31, 2005 at 1:09 pm | In Miscellaneous, Theater | No CommentsI’ve seen this info on several websites (including the St. Pete Times): Julia Roberts is going to star in the Broadway play Three Days of Rain next spring. I had planned to write a witty yet scathing smart-mouth comment about this, but I think I’m going to go throw up instead.
ok, anne, here’s your tim curry post
June 12, 2005 at 3:04 pm | In Miscellaneous, Movies, Theater | 1 CommentI was asked last week what I thought about Tim Curry not winning the Tony for his performance in Spamalot. This year I didn’t watch the Tonys or even read much about who and what was nominated, so I can’t really comment on whether or not he deserved to win. But I will say that I love Tim Curry. Anyone who has risen above the typecasting/pigeonholing/embarassing (depending on your viewpoint) role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show deserves a round of applause.
Curry is incredibly talented and can be wonderfully hilarious. He’s also an amazing singer. I have a tape (yes, I said tape, not CD) of his in my car right now. Once you hear his song “I Do The Rock” you’ll have it in your head the rest of the day. Oh, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites (I even bought the CD even though I have the tape).
