nip/tuck — what’s happened to you?

November 30, 2005 at 5:30 pm | In TV |

What is up with Nip/Tuck? That show started out as an intriguing contrast between the shallow, vain, handsome single doctor who slept with anything that moved and his plastic surgery practice partner, the inhibited, uptight, repressed doctor who was a stranger to his wife and kids.

Then Nip/Tuck delved into deeper issues and examined the lives of people who were attractive on the outside, but ugly and unhappy on the inside. Is beauty only skin deep? Can you change who you are by changing how you look?

Then it changed into a larger-than-life melodrama, with most of the characters revealing Deep Dark Secrets, having affairs, throwing temper tantrums and indulging their inner children.

Now Nip/Tuck has morphed into an over-the-top, campy, ridiculous, unenjoyable piece of junk. Yes, I know it’s fiction, fantasy, TV — capital T, capital V — and it’s not supposed to be like real life, or where’s the escapism? But at least give me one character to like and root for, someone who’s not despicable and annoying.

Between Nip/Tuck and the parts of Plastic Surgery Nightmares that I caught on the Discovery Channel (I think) on Monday night, I’ll stick with my cellulite and wrinkles, thank you very much.

  1. I agree. The show seems to be wandering around looking for a niche. Most of FX’s original programming tries to make the viewer feel uncomfortable while trying to hook them into watching religiously. I still watch Nip/Tuck; but my fervor is waning.

  3. Hi again.
My TV time is limited and precious, so some shows don’t get my attention because I have little time. Nip/Tuck grabbed my right away, but the surgeries seem routine now, with just the stories to hold our attention.
I’m glad they’re getting back to the slasher storyline, but I’m worried about a cheesy resolution.
Haven’t seen too many movies lately. Have to wait most of the time for them to hit DVD.

Cinderella Man is coming out, but I saw it at the show. Great movie.
Want to see many more during X-mas break, but have to decide if I’m going to work or not. Damn GM and their troubles.

    Well, Happy Movie going!

    WAZ

  4. hello,
    well i very much disagree.
NIP/TUCK is a show. A SHOW! not real life. fiction/ non-fiction…none of that matters when u are making a drama series. the point is that many ppl put there really like this show either u accept that OR not. i’m not saying u can’t speak ur mind or thoughts but taking it out on a FX hit series isn’t makin u look and smarter then me.
